Although the dark will cause some confusion, the elements of surprise and fear can be valuable. Remember that missile weapons are less useful in the dark, because the firers cannot see their targets clearly. {Night_Prebattle_Advice_Text_01_Title}Night Fighting Ability {Offer_Bait_Text_01_Text1}Sometimes it is worth trying to bait the enemy into breaking formation. Place a unit of heavy infantry some distance in front of your main battle line, and then advance both towards the enemy. Sometimes the enemy will take the bait and rush out to kill the infantry. If this happens you may be able to flank and rear attack the units that took the bait, at the cost of only one unit. {Offer_Bait_Text_01_Title}Offer Bait {Only_Cavalry_Vs_Only_Spearmen_Text_01_Text1}Your army consists purely of cavalry and your enemy fields only spearmen. Bah! {Pike_And_Shot_Text_01_Text1}Your army has a classical combination of pikemen and firearm equipped troops. The standard tactics for deploying these troops is to move the gunners to the flanks of the pikemen, having them fire into the centre of the enemy, then have the pikemen assault the weakened centre. {Pike_And_Shot_Text_01_Title}Pike and Shot {Pikemen_1_Thread_Text1}Pike units are great at receiving frontal charges when they are stationary and set in a 'Spearwall' formation. They do have weaknesses though. If charged from the flank or rear they present little defence and will quickly be defeated. {Pikemen_1_Thread_Title}Pikemen {Pikemen_2_Thread_Text1}Pike units behave differently with various combinations of their special ability 'Spearwall' and the use of the guard stance. The best defensive combination is forming into a 'Spearwall' and being in guard mode while stationary. This allows the pike unit to present a wall of pikes to attacking foes. The best offensive combination is being in 'Spearwall' and not being in guard mode, then attacking an enemy. This means the pikemen will aggressively lower their pikes and march them into the enemy stabbing and thrusting with multiple ranks. {Pikemen_2_Thread_Title}Pikemen {Pikemen_Form_Block_Defense_Text_01_Text1}When you field a large amount of pikemen, you have a couple of options. First you can place one unit at both ends of your battle line to guard your flanks, then place the remainder in the middle. Go on, wipe them off the wall. {Use_Artillery_To_Kill_Non_Missile_Units_On_Walls_Text_01_Title}Using Artillery {Use_Flaming_Ammo_Text_01_Text1}The enemy's morale is low, try shooting at them with flaming ammunition. This weakens their morale further, and could cause them to run in terror. The explosion caused can kill more than a normal rock would. The downside is that aiming accurately is much harder, and reload times are increased. {Use_Flaming_Ammo_Text_01_Title}Use Of Flaming Ammunition {Use_Standards_To_Improve_Morale_Text_01_Text1}Your Great Standard inspires your troops to perform with increased courage and fortitude in the face of enemy attacks. Keep the standard near to your troops that you fear may rout, to inspire them to continue fighting. Your archers will easily outshoot them if you can get them close enough. {Use_Your_Archers_Against_Artillery_Text_01_Title}Use Your Archers {Using_A_Shield_Wall_Text_01_Text1}We have at least one unit that can use the Shield Wall special ability. This ability locks a unit's shields and spears together and means the enemy faces a wall of steel! This is very effective against frontal attacks, but is only truly effective when several units can be lined up together so that flanking moves are difficult to execute. {Using_A_Shield_Wall_Text_01_Title}Using A Shield Wall {Using_Elephants_Text_01_Text1}The charge of your elephants is irresistible, but the noise of battle and the pain of inflicted wounds may cause them to panic and run amok. If this happens you will lose control and they will be dangerous to friend and foe alike. Try to keep them out of harm's way until you are ready to unleash them. {Using_Elephants_Text_01_Title}Using Elephants {Using_Javelinmen_Text_01_Text1}Often the best way to use javelin-armed units is to place them behind your battle line, and have them shower the enemy with javelins once engaged. This works whether attacking or defending, but be careful, as your own troops may get hit too. {Using_Javelinmen_Text_01_Title}Using Javelins {Using_Missile_Cavalry_Text_01_Text1}Often the best tactic is to try and circle around the sides of the enemy and shoot them from behind, or from the right flank, so they do not have the protection of their shields. If the enemy turn or chase you off, their formation will be disrupted and their men will tire considerably. {Using_Missile_Cavalry_Text_01_Title}Using Missile Cavalry {Using_Mortars_Text_01_Text1}Mortars, unlike other siege weapons, can be fired safely behind your own troops. Mortars arc their shots high into the air to fall upon the heads of our enemies. Mortars are not the most accurate of weapons, so once your troops are close to the enemies it would be best to find another target. {Using_Mortars_Text_01_Title}Using Mortars {Using_Swimmers_Text_01_Text1}At least one unit in your army can swim and thus bypass the crossing point. Use this ability to surprise and outflank the enemy defending the crossing! {Using_Swimmers_Text_01_Title}Swimming {Using_trebuchets_Text_01_Text1}A well placed rock can kill a lot of enemy troops, but it's hard to hit anything smaller than a settlement wall with these machines. Target dense concentrations of enemy units, so that you hit something even if it wasn't your intended target. {Using_trebuchets_Text_01_Title}Using trebuchets In Battle {Venice_Initial_1_Advice_Text_01_Text1}Buongiorno, Doge. I am your advisor, Lady Gwendolyn. I will guide you on managing and expanding the Most Serene Republic of Venice. You are currently looking at your capital city, Venice, on the campaign map. {Venice_Initial_1_Advice_Text_01_Title}Venetian Campaign {Venice_Initial_5_Advice_Text_01_Text1}Venice's lands are divided and surrounded by enemies. You will need to use your legendary navy to conquer your rivals. Your best plan is to move east by land and south by sea, but be wary of the Byzantines and the Turks. You should also fortify your regions against Milan and the Holy Roman empire to the west. The nearby rebel town of Zagreb will make an ideal first target. {Venice_Initial_5_Advice_Text_01_Title}Where to Start {Wagon_Fort_Usage_Text_01_Text1}Your Wagon Fort is a great defensive tool. It provides your men with cover from enemy attacks and also fires at the enemy if they are within range. Your wagon is armed with archers or gunners and sometimes even cannons! If you lose most of your crew or all of the wagons are destroyed the unit will be disbanded. {Wagon_Fort_Usage_Text_01_Title}Draw up the wagons {Warning_Fort_Abandoned_Advice_Text_01_Text1}You are leaving your fort unattended. Be warned that after a turn it will fall into ruin and disappear from the map. {Warning_Fort_Abandoned_Advice_Text_01_Title}Abandoned Fort {Wedge_Formation_Change_Loose_Warning_Text_01_Text1}Your cavalry are under fire from an enemy missile unit and are in 'wedge' formation. This makes them a sitting target when under fire. A 'loose' formation is more difficult to target. Change your formation by left-clicking on the formations button. Left-click the Show Me How button to see how to change formation. {Wedge_Formation_Change_Loose_Warning_Text_01_Title}Change Formation! {Wedge_Formation_Text_01_Text1}The Wedge formation makes your unit's charge more potent, but because the impact is only on a narrow front, it's usually better to use the standard close formation. Wedges are useful for charging through narrow gaps, or into flanks. {Wedge_Formation_Text_01_Title}Wedge Formation {When_Massively_Outnumbered_Text_01_Text1}When massively outnumbered it may be best to avoid the battle altogether.
